At our mobile shower program, our volunteers are the heart and soul of what we do. More than just providing a place to get clean, they offer compassion, conversation, and a sense of community to people who often feel overlooked by society. We spoke to a few of our dedicated volunteers to learn more about why they choose to spend their time serving those in need, the relationships they build, and the incredible impact they see firsthand.
Building Human Connections
"Volunteering with the mobile shower service is so much more than handing out towels and hygiene," says Kim, one of our longtime volunteers. "It’s about making connections. I’ve met so many people who’ve opened up to me about their struggles, their hopes, and sometimes just their day-to-day lives. For them, this isn’t just a shower; it’s a chance to feel seen and heard."
Kim’s words highlight one of the most powerful aspects of our service—human connection. A shower may last only a few minutes, but the conversations and small acts of kindness exchanged during that time can leave a lasting impact.
The Power of Dignity
Reuben, another regular volunteer, has seen how something as simple as a shower can restore dignity to those who have lost so much. "People come in worn down, often embarrassed," he shares. "But when they walk out, you can see the difference in their eyes. It's not just the dirt that’s washed away, it’s the weight they’ve been carrying. They stand a little taller."
Reuben believes that by treating each person with respect and care, volunteers can help restore a sense of pride and humanity to individuals who are often dehumanized by society. "The power of dignity shouldn’t be underestimated," he says. "When someone feels respected, they start to respect themselves more."
Creating Lasting Bonds
For many volunteers, it’s the relationships they build over time that keep them coming back. Annette, who has been volunteering for over two year, says, "You start to see familiar faces, and you get to know their stories. It feels more like a friendship than a service. One man, in particular, always makes a point to thank us personally. I look forward to seeing him every week."
Annette’s experience shows how meaningful these connections can be, both for the volunteers and the people they serve. It’s a reminder that even in the face of difficult circumstances, moments of kindness and mutual respect can foster genuine relationships.
Making a Real Difference
Every day, our volunteers witness the impact of their efforts. Whether it’s the relief of feeling clean, the joy of a warm smile, or the comfort of a kind word, these small gestures make a big difference. As Kim puts it, "It’s not just about showers—it’s about showing people they matter."
For our volunteers, this work is about more than providing hygiene services. It’s about offering hope, compassion, and the belief that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity. The bonds they build with the unhoused community are a testament to the power of human connection, and the difference it can make in the lives of others.
By choosing to volunteer, these individuals have become more than just helpers—they’ve become a source of light and humanity for those who need it most.
